Madinat Jumeirah, The Arabian Resort – part of Dubai based luxury hospitality group Jumeirah, extends a warm welcome to the brilliant Rainer Hersch, the world’s only classical music comedian, to the Madinat Theatre on August 10th and August 11th.
Rainer Hersch has performed shows all over the world. He has starred on radio and TV worldwide, and performed in comedy clubs throughout Europe. He has performed on every major comedy stage in Britain, and has appeared at the Edinburgh Festival eleven times; had numerous comedy-concert series at the South Bank in London and is now coming to the Madinat Theatre.
Rainer’s love for comedy and classical music began almost simultaneously, as did his need to share his passion with others. By the age of 12 he had already taken grades in the clarinet but was quickly drawn to the piano which he studied from the age of 14. This led to an obsession with piano music and, ultimately, a school concert society, which he organized single-handedly.
Rainer began his working life in the management of musical arts organizations. However, comedy had taken a hold and, unknown to his employers, he began moonlighting as a stand-up comedian on the London cabaret circuit. Short, unpaid stints in small clubs led to longer, paid appearances which in turn gradually developed into a parallel career.
Rainer combines his skills as a stand-up comedian with his music to produce 'All Classical Music Explained' (ACME). ACME is a simple approach to the difficult subjects ‘How to play instruments without practicing’, ‘Why is organ music so boring?’ and ‘What do conductors actually do?’ ACME proved to be an immediate hit with all kinds of audiences.
Although this show is pitched at those who have some knowledge of classical music, it is enjoyable for anyone who has sat through a concert working out where you are supposed to clap, be it a school hall or the Royal Albert Hall.
Those of us who know how to hum the classical adverts and bits from Vivaldi's Four Seasons will find something to laugh at. You don't really need much more experience than that. Rainer explains the rest, as the show's title points out.
