The director general of the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television was sacked, Qatari sources said Tuesday, amid allegations he cooperated with Saddam Hussein's intelligence agents. According to AFP, Mohammed Jassem al-Ali served at the top job in the station since it was launched in 1996.
Ahmed Chalabi, leader of an Iraqi opposition group, has accused several Al-Jazeera journalists of working for Saddam's secret services, based on documents found in state archives in Baghdad.
Al Jazeera's coverage of the Iraq war was criticized in the Western media for giving more time to officials of Saddam's government than to its opponents.
Earlier this month, a small crowd of Iraqis harassed an Al-Jazeera television crew, accusing the journalists of supporting Saddam's regime. (Albawaba.com)
