Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri met Tuesday with leaders of Hizbullah in Beirut in a bid to reach an understanding about changes in the region brought by the fall of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, the Beirut-based An Nahar newspaper reported Wednesday.

While the two sides did not reach any agreement, a Hizbullah source was quoted as saying by the daily that the meeting was positive and that more talks may be held in the future.

The visit by the four-man team of Hizbullah's bloc in parliament to Hariri had ended a year-long no-speaking strain between the two sides. An Nahar said the meeting was of particular significance in the sense that it had re-established direct contact between Hizbullah and Hariri.

"The talks were marked by reciprocal frankness and understanding," legislator Mohammed Raad, who heads Hizbullah's 12-man bloc in Lebanon's 128-member parliament, told reporters as he emerged from the meeting.

"We work on the ground base that shouldering national responsibilities would bring all sides closer to each other in the confrontation with threats facing the nation" in the wake of the U.S. war in Iraq, Raad said. (Albawaba.com)
