Iraqi security officials said they had recovered the bodies of 58 victims in Baghdad over the previous 24 hours, while a mass grave holding 28 corpses was found north of the city.
The Iraqi forces said they had found a mass grave holding 28 bodies just north of the capital in Diyala province. "The bodies were later transported to an Iraqi Police station in Baghdad," a US statement said, according to AFP.
Saddam trial
Meanwhile, a forensic expert has told ousted president Saddam Hussein's genocide trial that Iraqi forces shot kneeling mothers and young children in the head and dumped them into mass graves.
Showing pictures of three mass graves found around Iraq since the 2003 US invasion, US expert Michael Trimble stated that most of the victims at these sites were Kurdish children and women killed during Saddam's Anfal campaign.
Thursday's hearing started with the testimony of Trimble, the head of the mass graves investigation unit at the Iraqi High Tribunal, a government court in Baghdad trying former regime officials.
Over 120 bodies were found in one grave located in Iraq's northern province of Nineveh, the court heard.
The expert also showed a picture of the body of a young girl wearing a head scarf, between seven and 12 years old, "shot in the back of the head." Most of the dead were shot either standing or kneeling next to the graves.
