750 Egyptian soldiers to guard Gaza Strip border as Abbas expects pullout completion by Oct. 4

750 Egyptian security forces will be deployed along the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt  to under agreement to ensure that no weapons are ling into the Gaza Strip.

 

The so-called Philadelphi route, an area which has been greatly disputed over, will now be guarded by Egyptian rather than Israeli forces according to an agreement signed on Tuesday between Palestinian Minister for Civilian Affairs Muhammad Dahlan, American mediator James Wolfensohn and Israeli Defense Ministry Director-General Amos Yaron, according to YNet.
 
In addition, a deal was struck regarding the rubble left from the demolition of settlement homes in which all toxic material would be transferred to Israel. 80 percent of the non-toxic material would be reused by the Palestinians, while the rest will be transferred to Egypt.

 

Meanwhile, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said Wednesday that the Israeli army is expected to leave the Gaza Strip by October 4 at the latest. "There is another stage concerning the departure of the Israeli Army from the Gaza Strip expected to be completed on October 4 or it might be at any moment," Abbas told reporters after meeting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo.


Israeli military officials said Tuesday they expect all soldiers to have left the Strip by September 15.
