A car bomb detonated near police and government buildings in the western city of Haditha on Thursday, killing 10 people and injuring 27, authorities said.

The bombing targeted the main police station, said Col. Adnan Abdel-Rahman, the spokesman of the Iraqi Interior Ministry. Three officers were among the dead, he disclosed, according to The AP.

Haditha is a rural area located some 200 kilometer west of Baghdad.

A second car bomb went off about 5 kilometers west of Karbala on Thursday, killing two people inside the car, said Rahman Mshawi, a spokesman for the Karbala police.

Police chased the car after receiving a tip it was filled with explosive materials. Authorities said no one else was hurt, but that the explosion damaged electrical power lines in the area.

Elsewhere, five Iraqis from one family including a child were killed and two injured when two mortar rounds landed in their home early on Thursday in the northern oil city of Kirkuk, according to police.

The attack happened at about 11.45 pm in the Kurdish Rahimao neighbourhood on the northern edge of the city not far from a police station, according to police chief Adel Zein al-Abedin.

Meanwhile, U.S. Marines clashed Wednesday with resistance fighters in Ramadi. The Marines suffered no casualties, but said a "significant" number of Iraqi fighters died.

However, Dr. Allaa al-Ani of the Ramadi Hospital said the attacks killed three people and wounded 19.

Earlier, a U.S. military vehicle swerved off a road to avoid a truck and rolled down an embankment in northern Iraq, killing two American troops and wounding two, the U.S. military said in a statement Thursday.

The accident took place at about 11 a.m. Wednesday near Tall Afar, some 70 kilometers west of Mosul. (albawaba.com)
