Remember that one blog back in 2011? A new documentary tells the story of the real author behind it.

Long past are the days where people used the term 'revolution' to describe Syria. But back when the word still rang loud in media and activism circles, a girl named Amina Arraf penned a blog that enchanted journalists and a French woman who fell in love with her, about her life as an out lesbian in Damascus.

The only problem, they would all soon find out, was that Arraf not all those things. (Elsewhere on Al Bawaba, we reported on what became of "Arraf," at least last time we checked. To see that story, but spoil the movie, click here.)

A Gay Girl in Damascus: The Amina Profile looks at the catfishing tale that was Amina. Those that have been following the conflict for a long time might remember the media frenzy around the blog in 2011, and the full-blown Internet frenzy that followed news of her apparent kidnapping by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Out this week, Canadian Sophie Deraspe's documentary traces the blogger's tricky web to the moment of reveal. More than four years into Syria's full-blown civil war, it's a salient reminder that now, just as ever, nothing about the Syrian conflict is black and white.
