An official source at the Syrian Interior Ministry on Wednesday denied press reports by some sources on the alleged arrest of Sheikh Ma’ashouk al-Khaznawi.

The source said in a statement to SANA "all the circles concerned have been for several days following up on this issue with great care to get any information about his disappearance."

Al-Khaznawi, 46, is a prominent Syrian Kurdish cleric, who has recently called for regime change in Syria. About a week ago,  Al-Khaznawi disappeared after leaving left the Islamic Studies Centre in Damascus.

On its part, the Syrian Human Rights Committee said Al-Khaznawi was abducted by Syrian security agents.
