A woman sustained a fatal fall from a Tripoli high school building Wednesday morning as students were filing into the building for nationwide official exams, a security source said.

The woman reportedly fell from the third, and highest, floor of the Ibn Khaldoun school building in the Abi Samra neighborhood of Tripoli, incurring a number of broken bones and critically injuring her head.

She later succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital.

The woman, who was in her 50s, was a teacher at the all-girls school, the security source said, and was present Wednesday morning to help proctor the exam.

Authorities did not yet know whether the fall was accidental, and representatives from the school were not immediately available to comment.

The incident occurred as thousands of ninth grade students across Lebanon began the annual Brevet exam, the results of which determine whether they will be admitted into secondary school next year.

Education Ministry Director-General Fadi Yarak arrived at the school shortly before noon, Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3) reported.
