A man has been caught on camera pounding at his chest and taunting a bison in Yellowstone National Park.

Lindsey Jones was driving through the park with her family when the cars began to slow down and stop on the road as a bison wandered by.

But one man was undaunted by the large animal - which can weigh up to 2,000 pounds - and got out of his car to taunt the bison on the two-way road.

Jones took out her cellphone video and began to film as the man slowly walked down the road to approach the beast and proudly beat his chest.

The bison spots him and immediately turns around and prepares to charge.

But the man doesn't back down, instead grunting and taunting the bison once again.

The bison then begins to charge the man for a second time as Jones exclaims 'Oh god, I can't watch anymore!' from behind the camera.

'Get out of there!' someone else in her car can be heard shouting.

Luckily for the man, the bison quickly loses interest and turns away from him.

After one last look, the man slowly walks away from the bison.

Jones posted the clip on Facebook, where it has since been viewed more than a million times.

It remains unclear if the man was cited by Yellowstone park staff.

Two people have been injured by bison at the park in 2018.

Kim Hancock, 59, was gored by a bull bison in June when she got within 10 yards of it while walking along a boardwalk in the Lower Geyser Basin.

Park officials said that, at one point, people in the Hancock's group were closer than 15ft from the bison. The safe distance is considered to be at least 75ft.

The bison got agitated and crossed the boardwalk, charging the crowd and goring Hancock. It then immediately fled the area.

In May a woman was walking around a bend on a trail and was tossed by a bison she hadn't seen. It butted her in the thigh and slightly injured the woman.

'Give animals space when they're near trails, boardwalks, parking lots, or in developed areas.'

'If you can't maintain these distances, turn around and find an alternate route.'
