Forget long hours in the gym in the battle to lose the fat, image-conscious Dubai residents are choosing to lie down on a surgeon’s table and have it sucked out of them.
Liposuction is now the most popular form of plastic surgery in the emirate, says surgeon Dr Luiz Toledo.
Toledo revealed to 7DAYS that more than half of surgeries he has performed so far this year have been for liposuction. He revealed:

Toledo added: “Liposuction remains the most popular of the procedures that I perform.
“It is often combined with other body contouring techniques.” The Dubai-based surgeon added that the plastic surgery landscape is changing as patients become more aware about the latest procedures thanks to the internet. He added: “If an application is used in Switzerland one day, they expect it to be available here the next.”
However, Toledo said a study of nearly 1,500 of patients over the past three years has revealed there is also a growing demand for non-invasive procedures, with people increasingly turning to small, painless, short-term tweaks with the aid of botox or fillers.
He added: “International and local trends for 2013 predict the continued growth in the popularity of non-surgical procedures.” In terms of surgery, the second most popular operation is nose remodeling, while requests for work on breasts accounted for just five per cent of business and the Brazilian Buttock procedure, which uses fat grafting to remould bottoms, accounted for seven per cent.
He said: “Over the past three years 48 per cent of my patients have been residents from the UAE, 17 per cent from the UK and 13 per cent from other GCC countries, with the majority between the ages of 31 to 40 years old.”
“Eighty-seven per cent of patients are female, 13 per cent male - which is slightly higher than the international standard of 12 per cent.” Toledo believes that the demand for fat removal is set to increase as technology evolves.
He said: “We will continue to see self-educated patients requesting quick, relatively inexpensively priced non-invasive treatments.”
